Snapshot: Taman Botani in Putrajaya

In our Snapshots we like to highlight handpicked little (or bigger) gems all around greater KL. They are simply too good not to share with our readers! Our Karaokemama will take you in this Snapshot to Taman Botani in Putrajaya.

Taman Botani in Putrajaya reminds me of a fading flower. It obviously used to be quite a spectacular garden, but is looking a little rough around the edges these days. Despite this, it is still a great place to go for a short walk or a bike ride. Considering it is free to enter, it’s worth a visit.

We decided to go for a family bike ride early one morning, so that we could get round most of the gardens quickly and easily. The kids had their own bikes but we hired adult bikes for RM10 per hour which were decent enough. Saying that, the saddle was a little on the hard side!

Around the lake and to the Sun Garden

If you cycle around the lake, the journey is relatively flat and easy and the views across Putrajaya are stunning. There are a few interesting trees and plants to see along the way. Make sure you apply plenty of mosquito repellent though, as we did find this a problem when we stopped to take photos. If you are feeling particularly fit, you can ride your bike to the top of the hill towards the Sun Garden and explore the different zones. However, if you are looking for a range of flowers you may be disappointed. There was not much in bloom when we visited. Likewise the Astaka Morocco which we have enjoyed seeing in the past is currently under renovation, which is a pity.

There are a few little cafes and restaurants dotted around. None of these were open when we visited in December. Best to bring your own drinks and snacks.

The Canopy Bridge

By far, the highlight for our family was the Canopy Bridge. It allows you to walk amongst the treetops and gives you a closer look at the trees and plants. Note: no bikes allowed.  All in all, if you are simply looking for a peaceful place for a relaxing walk or bike ride amongst nature that you can do for free, then Taman Botani is perfect.

Bike hire

Bike hire is available daily from 9am – 12pm and 2 – 5pm and costs RM10 per hour. It’s closed though on Tuesdays. On Friday it’s open from 9 – 11am and 3 – 5pm.

During CMCO the gardens operated during the CMCO from 7am – 7pm. During this current MCO starting today 13 January 2020, the garden will be closed. Please do check with them here when they will be open again.
