AirAsia has converted its order of 253 Airbus planes from the A320neo to the larger A321neo.

This means that the airline will be able to increase its flight capacity in the future, to cater to the continuously strong demand, said AirAsia Group Berhad executive chairman Datuk Kamarudin Meranun said in a statement. “We have spent a number of years reviewing what the future of our operations will look like. With the numerous efficiency benefits and the operational flexibility this aircraft brings, the A321neo will be the new backbone of our operations as we continue to expand to meet growing air travel demand across Asia,” he said.

In total, the airline has placed 592 orders of planes in the A320 range from Airbus. Following the order upgrade, AirAsia is now Airbus’ biggest customer for the A321neo, with a total of 353 planes on order.

The A321neo features the latest technologies in air travel and has an expanded seating capacity with optimised use of cabin space. There are also additional exits and a new cabin door configuration.

AirAsia currently has 230 planes in the A320 range already in service, flying out of its hubs in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Japan and the Philippines.
